CHAMPION SPARK PLUG #GT-1 AVIATION PLUG TESTER 1918-46- the B.G. SERVICE Co.Fla.To Be Picked Up Only
..........We did all the research  for you !  .......  our time is included in the price !    A very rare , aviation spark plug tester ( not a tin can cleaner) with a  wood base or case,  and  brass, construction) . (3) identifying tags .  .( Two being from competing 1920's spark plug manufactures  )  Tag #1,   the  B. G. Corporation of NY,  Model  M519C - Serial # 649 , founded in 1918 by Charles Brewster a engineer and Arthur Goldsmith a jeweler. The  BG Corp.  pioneered work in the development of Aircraft spark plugs during and  after WW I, with it's " Mica Insulator "  design. It  was also a major supplier of spark plugs to the US military during WW II ,and later,.... to large  oil and gas companies  for there  stationary gas engines, that ran for long periods of time . There plugs were known for: " symbolizing quality"   The company struggled threw the 50's due to the development of the jet engine and was disbanded in 1964. Today it's known as the " BG Service Co" of Fla. . ,makers of industrial ignition products. (This would look good in there lobby or the CEO's office )  Tag # 2  Champion Spark Plug Co. ,  Model GT-1 ,   Patent Pending. ?    In 1904 General Motors persuaded Albert Champion to manufacture plugs for them (Champion Plugs) by 1908 Albert went out on his own ,but due to legal issues could no longer use his own last name. Using his initials ,the "AC"  Spark Plug Co. was born. Both AC and Champion started to produce  "Aircraft" spark plugs as early as 1916 ,competing with the BG spark plug  company.  Aluminum   Tag #3 , the  U S O A  ,  W -156  is for the "United States Overseas Airlines ", a small independent airlines ,with it's headquarters at the Cape May County Airport, in Wildwood, New Jersey .Started in 1947 by Dr. Ralph Cox Jr.,with a fleet of 15 planes ( DC-4's and DC-6's) with flights between NY and Miami-NY to Calif.,and Calif. to Hawaii and the orient. The company did all of it's own maintenance and repairs (perhaps, using this tester ?)  and lasted until 1962. The plug tester comes in a wood case that measures 16 1/4" x 18 1/4" and is 9 1/2" high. The total height is 15" ,the case is partially  painted green,and would look great stripped and re finished. HEAVY... it weighs approx 55 lbs. Look inside !  If you open the lid for the attachments ,the direction for use, and required attachment needed for each make and model of spark plug is on a piece of paper .There are only 5 different plug manufactures listed (BG, Champion, Bendix ,Aero and AC...... Stamped on the brass head is Pat. # 257622 and 3948 .On the movable arm with a wood knob  (that  raises and lowers the plug) is M 519-3. The voltage adjusting knob reads " Vari ac " , General Radio Co. ,Cambridge, Mass. Type 200-C, 115 volts. The gauge is a "Weston,"  Model 517 , 0-130 volts,  AC. The two light bulbs are GE (NE-34's)  there is a small  outside source  air pressure line, but no pressure gauge  ? The tester only has one  plug adapter ( shown with a plug in it ) The plug is spring loaded.The wall plug has been cut off the cord.. There are no spark plugs included . See all the photo's as they are a important  part of the auction... Being offered  "AS-IS ,  not tested, for display with your vintage Spark Plug collection , automotive / aviation shop or garage  equipment collection . Due to it's weight..HEAVY ... and age ( wood case, glass gauge and light bulbs) it is to be picked up only ...  ....Always interested in vintage race car speed equipment and parts for dirt track race cars of the 1930's with Ford model A or B engines.  Located near  Pa.
